I'm not generally an "Oscars" person; in years past, I've generally found it a display of back-patting that seems mildly insincere, mostly because it's one actor feting another.
However, there are moments.
By now, those who know me are aware that I stand in absolute awe of our emergency services; just imagine, there is a person out there (thousands of them) who, even if they KNEW they'd get killed doing it, even if they didn't know us at all, would run towards that danger just to try and save you and I.
I nurture a quiet anger towards people, both in power and out, who either ignore or malign our emergency service personnel.
Cops, firefighters, paramedics, doctors, nurses, soldiers; they all deserve our unqualified support, and "support" does not mean simply being quietly proud; it means being vocal whenever possible, to keep these brave souls in the public eye as much as possible.
Accordingly, I'd like to thank the director of "The Hurt Locker"; Kathryn Bigelow, not once but twice, was very plain about her feelings towards our first responders; she nearly broke down in tears while trying to express the debt we all owe to those who WANT to protect us.
They risk their lives. We can't do ENOUGH to pay them back, so the LEAST we can do is make sure they know we remember them - while they're still alive.
When I'm in office, it won't be a rubber-stamp - I won't just write ANYONE a blank cheque - BUT one of my TOP priorities will be making sure, as Ms. Bigelow insisted, that those who stand behind us also know that we stand behind them.
